RAN is Akira Kurosawa’s masterly interpretation of Shakespeare’s King Lear. The director spent 10 years storyboarding every shot in the film, a fact bourne out by the stunningly beautiful imagery and Kurosawa’s only Oscar nomination for Best Director. Starring Tatsuya Nakadai, Akira Terao, Jinpachi Nezu and Daisuke Ryu, the story concerns an elderly lord’s abdication and his three sons – one loyal whom the father foolishly exiles, and two corrupt who will bring about his ruin.
